On Line Assignments
During lockdown, Wifie members were invited to take part in some regular assignments. These would encourage members to reflect on their photographic practice and to continue developing creative responses despite the restrictions we were all facing.
Although lockdown no longer exists we are continuing with the assignments because our programme co-ordinator has moved out of Edinburgh to build her own house. This has impacted on the ability to have our more regular workshops and exhibitions visits.

Assignment 25. B&W photography
This time Wifie members were invited to create images that didn't rely on colour for impact and instead explore the creative use of black & white photography. This allows the photographer the opportunity to concentrate on elements of photography such as the quality and direction of light and how this impacts on the contrast, texture, form and exposure of the final image.

Assignment 24. My space
This assignment invited Wifie members to get out with their cameras and look afresh at the area or areas that they live. We can so often walk past interesting details because we are so familiar with the things around us or we forget to get out and capture what is near to us when the weather or conditions of light are amazing, transforming the everyday into a magical moment.

Assignment 23. Intentional Camera Movement.
Intentional Camera Movement or ICM is a fun and exciting technique used in photography. It isn't as straight forward as you might think and is definitely not just 'camera shake'. It is a creative technique that can have a painterly feel and requires a slow shutter speed and lots of trial and error to get the right feel to the image your are trying to achieve.

Assignment 22. Detail
It is so easy to stand back and capture the scene in front of you but sometimes it is worth taking a closer look and get down to the nitty gritty! The great thing about exploring 'detail' within your photographic practice is that it helps you to tell a story and to introduce elements within a scene that may not always catch attention.

Assignment 21. Aspect Ratio
Playing around with the aspect ratio setting on your camera can bring a whole new perspective to image making. It is very different to have a 'square canvas' to one that is long and narrow. How does composition work when you have an aspect ratio of 1:1 rather than 3:2 and where should you place the key element within your image.

Assignment 20. Abstract Photography
Although we have done an assignment on Abstract Photography before, it is always a joy to play around with this style of photography. It is fun and creative and allows you to explore the use of macro or Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) techniques.
Assignment 19. Landscape & Cityscape
This assignment was a wee bit different from previous ones. Members were asked to take a photo in the countryside and one in the city but the two photos had to have a connection with each other. Click on an image below to see more photos.
Assignment 18. Light & Shade
Light is fundamental to photography and in situations where you have strong light, like full sun or studio spotlights you can really create moody and atmospheric images. With the increased difference between the exposure of the highlights in contrast to the shadows you need to work harder to get the right overall exposure. Assignment 17. Minimalism
Although we have done an assignment on minimalism before, I thought that it would be great to revisit this style of photography. There are a number of ways to approach minimalist photography but keep in mind the importance of composition as this can be more important when there are few elements within a photograph. Other things you might want to consider are to limit your colour palette or go black & white. Click on the images below to see more photos.
Assignment. 16. Urban Photography
Street Photography and Urban Photography are for many people the same thing but for others there can be subtle differences and we felt that this assignment was a worthwhile project to explore. Click on the images below to see more photos.

Assignment 15. Double / Multiple Exposures
Photography offers so many different ways of being able to express yourself and to show the world around us. For this assignment members of Wifie were asked to explore their creativity by combining images together in whatever way they wanted and come up with something new and inspiring. Click on the images below to see more.
Assignment 14. Inspired by Street Photographers
For this assignment Wifie members were invited to research the style and approach of famous photographers, like Oscar Marzarloni or Vivian Maier, and come up with their own images. This proved to be quite a challenge for us but some amazing photos were taken showing the diversity of styles and approaches. Click on the images below to see more photos.
Assignment 13. Low Key & High Key
Without light we wouldn't have photography. An important element to extend the mood of your images is to understand the different types of light and using this combined with exposure create either low key images or high key images. This was the assignment for Wifie members and you can see more of this work by clicking on the images below.
Assignment 12. Shadows
Photography is all about light and shade so for this assignment we were asked to look at shadows for inspiration. We were lucky that we had some lovely sunny weather helping to create many shadows out and about but what are the possibilities when you take control and create your own shadows. Assignment 11. Back Light
Shooting into the light is not an approach to photography that you might take everyday but it can give amazing results. Also referred to as 'Contre jour lighting', which I feel describes it perfectly. You can use the light effectively shooting this way but you have to be careful with your exposure and angle of light to camera. You can also use 'fill in flash' to help bring detail into your subject. However I think Wifie members have avoided this approach and gone for the effect of back light as you find it. Have a look at the different images that Wifie members have done on 'backlight'. Click on images below to see more.
Assignment 10. Using Reflections
Following on from the theme of weather, Wifie members were invited to explore 'reflections' as the next assignment. Reflections can be seen in many different places from water to windows and each of these provide different elements into your image. Here are some of these images. Click on images below to see more.
Assignment 9. Using the Weather.
At our belated AGM we set a new challenge, to get out no matter what the weather and capture the elements at their best....or worst! We had a great time trying out different ways to represent the diversity of the weather and managed to capture some amazing images.

Assignment 8. Minimalism
This new challenge asked members to consider minimalism as the central creative element of their photographs. This was a really nice exercise and the images that members created demonstrated how less can often be more in photographic terms.

Assignment 7. Using the Magic of Light
This assignment was to capture the magic of light. We know that without light we can't take photos but sometimes light can be the main feature of the image - where it plays a starring role rather than just illuminate the subject. This involves an awareness of the direction and quality of light at different times. For example consider shooting during the Golden Hour or Contre Jour, against the light. Explore the angle of light in relation to the subject you are photographing by moving around it or explore how light is filtered through trees, glass or other objects.. Assignment 6. Five Days, Five Photos
Members were invited to take a photo a day over a period of 5 consecutive days. This assignment offered an opportunity to take and share an image of anything that caught your eye. You will see that there are a diverse range of images and / or sequence of images. Doing this is much harder than most people might think so do give it a try and see what you come up with.

Assignment 5. Using Numbers & Letters
We are surrounded by letters and numbers everywhere so members were invited to look at creating images with letters and / or numbers. Members could either photograph existing numbers or letters that you can come across in a range of different places or use their imagination to 'find' letters from objects or things they come across. Click on images below to see more.
Assignment 4. Making a Collage in Colour
Using a limited colour palette to create a series of images that worked together, Wifie members produced some amazing images. To combine the various photos they had taken members used apps such as Photo grid / collage or on a computer using Photoshop to place their images together. Click on images below to see more.
Assignment 3. Using Light & Exposure.
In photography we mostly look to obtaining the correct exposure but there is no such thing as a 'correct' exposure. in some circumstance you might want to over or under expose your image. This exposure tied in with the type of light you are shooting with can give you either a High Key and Low Key image. Click on the images below to see more.
Assignment 2. Using Aspect Ratio & Negative Space
This time we looked again at aspect ratio but this time setting it at16:9. As well as the aspect ration members were asked to explore the way that negative space can be used to great effect in photographs. Click on an image below to see more.
Assignment 1. Using Aspect Ratio to create square images.
We often forget that we have a choice to shoot using a range of different aspect ratios and how this can be used to create specific images. Here Wifie members were assigned the task of setting their camera to a ration 1:1 and then take 4 images and create a square using these 4 images. Click on one of the images below to see more.
