Informal Workshops
Wifie members are able to participate in a variety of informal workshops that are organised throughout the year. As we are a collective, different members are able to share their knowledge on a range of different areas of photography from photo editing to camera settings. Click on the images to see more about each workshop.
Workshop. Phone Camera Photography. July 2023
This workshop was an introduction to the different functions and settings that may be found on a phone camera. It was held at one of our favourite locations, Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens and members were able to share knowledge and ideas. For this workshop we focused on shooting our images in Black & White, working with macro or close up and then seeing what different ratios were available to shoot in panorama. |
Workshop. Exposure and White Balance. February 2020
This workshop was a chance to play around with our cameras and do practical exercises looking at light, exposure and white balance. Using pastel chalks on white and black fabrics we explored exposure compensation and as we were in a room with a variety of light sources we were able to play around with the WB setting. Members were then invited to send in their own 'still life' photos.

Camera Workshop on composition. October 2019
This workshop was an exploration of the important elements of composition when creating images, how the eye is led into a picture or the balance that can be created by using the rule of thirds. We also had a look at the aspect ratio where you can set your camera to different dimensions relating to the height and width of the image. Most people use 3:2, the aspect ratio of 35mm film but others you can choose are 4:3, 1:1 or 16:9

Camera Workshop. Edinburgh Botanical Garden. 2018
In July 2018 Wifie members met up for a digital camera session. The gardens were awash with colour and a great inspiration to try out different settings on our cameras. For the session we chose to challenge ourselves by restricting each member to only one of the colours of the rainbow and with seven members we were able to create our own rainbow!

Workshop. Portraiture at the Museum.
This informal camera session explored natural light photography with an emphasis on portraiture. The National Museum of Scotland is a great location for taking photographs of friends but you have to remember that it is a public space so do consider other people who are there to enjoy what the museum offers. It is also important to ask permission and in particular if you are going to use a tripod.

Camera Workshop. The Nature of Plants.
Following a visit to see the exhibition "wildlife Photographer of the Year' Wifie members ventured out to capture the nature of plants at the Edinburgh Botanical Garden. With some wonderful images from the exhibition to inspire us we explored the diverse plant life available despite the weather conditions typical at this time of year.

Audacious Women's Festival 2017
Portraits Exposed. Wifie members ran a workshop during this festival where women who were interested in photography could come along to this informal session and try out some ideas. The workshop aimed to explore portraiture from both sides of the camera so those who were up for the challenge were able to 'pose' in whatever costume they fancied. The session was fun and time was limited but we managed to get some interesting shots.

Audacious Women's Festival 2016 - Portrait Workshop and events.
During Febraury Wifie members organised and and ran a photography workshop on portraiture. This workshop was open to members and non-members and was part of the Audacious Women's Festival. The workshop was organised so that we could produce images of women from history and these then became cardboard statues and were located in various places in Edinburgh. Unfortunately both Elsie Inglis and Maria Ogilvie-Gordon were removed from sight but the others, Mary Sommerville, Elizabeth Blackwell and Muriel Spark remained in place for the week.

Workshop on camera functions. Winter Garden. October 2015
A digital camera sessions at the Winter Gardens in the Saughton area of Edinburgh. This is a beautiful little park and the greenhouses would provide much needed shelter if required. The workshops were for Wifie members to come along and share a camera setting that they like to use and others might like to try out. We had a lot of fun but ran out of time so only managed to look at White Balance and depth of Field.

Workshop making Sun Prints.
Whilst enjoying a picnic and some beautiful sunshine in Saughton Park, Wifie members were able to experiment with sun paper, a special paper coated in light sensitive chemicals. Using leaves and flowers that were lying around the gardens we made photograms highlighting the interesting shapes created by the plants. The process is simple- place your objects on the paper and expose to the sun for about one minute. Then quickly put the paper in water to ‘fix’ the image and wash off the remaining chemicals. Once it is dry the colour of the paper deepens to a rich blue, leaving behind the white shadow of our objects.

Camera Workshop.. Leith Docks
Some Wifie members visited Leith Docks for a workshop looking at photographic picture skills. It was a bit cloudy that day but we still got some great photographs and learned more about how to get the best from our cameras.

Stills kindly hosted an afternoon workshop for Wifie members. We produced a range of images and learned how to create our own pinhole cameras using every day items.
