Common Riding by Margaret Drysdale
This traditional event dates back to the lawless times when Border families needed to protect their lands from thieves, or other clans or the English. The local lord would appoint a leading towns person to ride the clan's boundaries, also known as 'marches' to prevent neighbouring landlords or their clans folk from taking over this land.
These 'Common Ridings' are now part of tradition in many Border towns and are held over the summer. The images for this project were taken at the Musselburgh Common Riding.
