Molly MacCaul. Ce n'est pas une poire
A photographic study for International Women's day 2013
For me like most women in the contemporary world, 'Body Image' is at the forefront of my sensibility and it is virtually impossible to avoid how images of women can and do influence how we feel about ourselves.
This study explores the taxonomy of women in relation to their 'body shape' and its gendered nomenclature. The description of women as 'organic' shapes, perpetuates the hegemony wherein the female is represented as nature not culture, nurturing and passive.
Echoing techniques that are popular with many 'Fine Art' nude photographers, the images are black & white, 'soft focus' and been shot using a shallow depth of field. This gives the image allure and sensuality, whilst at the same time diminishing any blemishes that signify the 'real body.
