Inspired by Simon Phipps
Brutal Scotland at Street Level Gallery.

In April 2026 some Wifie members met up in Glasgow to see this exhibition at Street Level Gallery. It was a journey well worth making as we all found the exhibition fascinating, some of us recognising and reminiscing about particular building and all of us feeling inspired by the overall creativity and presentation of Simon Phipps photographs.

Angie created this amazing collage of buildings that she photographed whilst in Glasgow and then added to the overall impact with a perfect nod to the exhibition, she coloured one of her images in red. Fabulous.

Yvonne has captured the brutalist theme with her five images, shooting them in black & white with the added drama of infrared, this has helped elevate the boldness and dramatic structure of her photographs. Eileen and Margaret Munro on the other hand captured the brutal nature of the buildings themselves whilst Belinda explored the geometric structure within the Museum of Scotland.
Wifie members were given the brief that they could extend their interpretation into Constructivist Photography if they wanted and in these examples we can see how Molly's three images capture this concept really well, shooting the metal structure at a very low angle and incorporating text into her images. Margaret Thomson and Olga have also chosen to combine two or more photographs to create their amazing images.
